I was born in the small Tlingit village of Klawock (long ago known as“Klawak”), on Prince of Wales Island off the coast of Southeastern Alaska. It is the original home of the Peratrovich family, whose patriarch was John Peratrovich, an immigrant from Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia. It is also home to one of the largest populations of Ravens in Alaska. One of the legends that I recall about the naming of the village was that it represented the Raven’s guttural call “klawaaaaaak!” Here is Raven in a familiar pose, dispensing his opinion to any one present. This self-assured bird is never lacking in “attitude.” Bronze
