Since childhood, I have enjoyed observing the adventurous and entertaining sea otters of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest.  I was influenced early on by Harold McCracken's book, "The Last of the Sea Otters" first published in 1942 and now out of print.  It left a lasting impression on me.

"Medviedki" (Russian for "Little Bear"), the book's title character, was one of the last remaining sea otters of a once thriving population decimated by the excesses of the fur trade in Alaska.

I have tried to show "Medviedki" as I have always imagined him, relaxing in his favorite place - a bed of kelp.

Medviedki won Juror's Choice in the second annual All Alaska Native Art Show in Anchorage, Alaska, March 2001, and Viewer's Choice in the North Kitsap Art Show in Port Gamble, Washington, July 2000.
