The Tlingit People of Southeastern Alaska have a deep appreciation
for all living things, which is manifested in their totem poles and
other totemic art. This respect is reflected in their performance
of ceremonial dances. Dancers dress as Eagles, Killer Whales, Salmon,
Bears, Wolves or other creatures of the air, sea and forest. The dancers'
movements imitate the motions of the animals they represent, while
tribal drums and songs tell the story.
Spirit Dancer
shows a moment in one of many stories about Raven, who created the
world and brought the Sun and Moon to the People.
