My daughter Betsy (Mary Elizabeth) was named after the grandmother she never met. My mother, Elizabeth Peratrovich, passed away just seven months before Betsy was born. My mother would have been very proud of our Betsy--and that’s what my father would tell her every time they met.

Betsy’s Indian name is "Shaaxhaatk'i" pronounced "Shaaw-hut-kee" which in our Tlingit language means "Root of Women."
